Policy & Action
Advancing Tribal Higher Education Through Policy, Partnership, and Engagement
On behalf of the nation’s TCUs, AIHEC engages policymakers, Tribes, and federal agencies to ensure Tribal higher education is recognized, supported, and strengthened through law and policy.
AIHEC works across Congress, federal agencies, and national coalitions to advance legislation, protect funding, and strengthen the systems that support Tribal higher education.

Federal Relations
Building Relationships That Advance Tribal Higher Education
Federal agencies make decisions every day that affect TCUs — from student financial aid and workforce development programs to research, infrastructure, and institutional funding. AIHEC works directly with the federal departments and agencies that shape the rules and regulations governing these programs, ensuring the needs of Tribal Nations, Native students, and Tribal communities remain a priority within the Executive Branch.
Through ongoing engagement, consultation, and partnership, AIHEC helps shape the implementation of federal regulations while advocating for the federal government's trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations.

Congressional Affairs
Protecting the Legal Foundation of Tribal Colleges and Universities
AIHEC works with Congress to protect and strengthen the laws and funding that support TCUs. This includes securing annual appropriations, advancing active legislative priorities, and protecting the authorizing legislation that provides the framework for TCU programs — from the Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities Assistance Act to Higher Education Act programs and Land-Grant authorities.
AIHEC regularly provides Congressional testimony, educates policymakers, and monitors legislative developments to ensure Native students and Tribal Nations remain a priority on Capitol Hill.

Policy Priorities
Advancing the Issues That Matter Most to TCUs
AIHEC develops coordinated strategies around the policy issues most critical to TCUs and the Native students they serve — including Native language revitalization, workforce Pell eligibility, and Land-Grant status and funding, among other priorities.
By monitoring federal action, building strong relationships, and elevating these priorities with lawmakers and agencies, AIHEC drives meaningful change that strengthens institutions and supports long-term Native student success.
