Native Languages Center

Language Documentation Workshop

Introduction

Welcome to the Language Documentation workshop. This workshop was developed by the AIHEC Native Language Initiative and inspired by the work of the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) from the University of Arizona. We are grateful for Dr. Wilson de Lima Silva and Dr. Amy Fountain and their contribution to the development of this series.

The intent for this workshop series is to provide an overview on how to plan for a Language Documentation Project for your community or organization. It will provide guidance on determining the best type of documentation project for the goals/needs of your language program or community. It will then dive into assessing materials that may already be available in your community and how to blend this with collection of new materials. Careful attention will be paid to the importance of a Data Management Plan and includes discussion of digital tools used in collection, analysis, or development of material into language resources. Lastly, there is guidance on how to find outside support for your project.

This workshop series will have 4 modules:

  1. Overview: Language Documentation
  2. Documentation and Data Management
  3. Digital Technology for Language Documentation
  4. Supporting the Work: Funding, Partners, Technology/Products
