Software: Code Editors & Development

We've talked about software tools that you can license, buy or use – but all of these applications were created by someone who knows how to code. And if you know how to code, you can create custom applications for your own project. Developing your own applications takes training and some resources to do so. Coding and development won’t be discussed in this workshop series, but refer to the handout Code Editors and Development below for some quick reference information on coding programming languages, database management systems, and server administration.

Software: Customizable Language Learning Apps

These are language learning apps such as Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, or other apps that create language learning resources. These are not typically tools that are used for language documentation, but they may be useful supplements to language learning projects. Some considerations if you plan to work with companies or organizations to develop apps:

  • Often, the apps are based in antiquated and ineffective pedagogy for language learning and not sufficient to produce new speakers of a language
  • Helpful for providing learners with things like grammar drills and vocabulary lessons, but drills and memorization don’t often lead to fluency
  • Many companies or organizations (although not all) can be for-profit, are start-ups, etc.

Please refer to the ‘Check Before You Tech!’ resource below to learn more about what you should look for if you choose to develop language apps and work with a vendor.
